Because transplant surgery utilizes large amounts of blood and blood products, blood donations to the local blood supply are strongly encouraged to ensure adequate supplies are on hand when donor organs become available.
The following gives the average percentages, based on seven regions, found for ABO and Rh blood groups
O+ = 38.4 %
O - = 7.7 %
A+ = 32.3 %
A - = 6.5 %
B+ = 9.4 %
B - = 1.7 %
AB+ = 3.2 %
AB - = 0.7 %
It should be mentioned here that just because you are an organ transplant recipient doesnt necessarily mean that you cannot donate blood, platelets, etc. Your medications are the determining factor.
Initial registration as a bone marrow donor can be accomplished when donating blood.

Because transplant surgery utilizes large amounts of blood and blood products, blood donations to the local blood collection organization are strongly encouraged to ensure adequate supplies. INOVA Blood Donor Services is the only local blood collection organization in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. It is the primary source of blood and blood products used for transplant surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital and at Washington Hospital Center.
INOVA collects blood from three northern Virginia hospital centers listed above and at various business, church, and civic blood drives in the metropolitan area. It locally tests and processes this supply for various tissue components including plasma and platelets.
Contact Linda Wilson at 703-698-3885 for additional information, or if you wish to schedule the mobile unit at your place of business, your church, etc.
