Indemnity Insurance Coverage
If you are covered by health insurance you will have to contact your provider to determine if you have coverage for an organ transplant. Your plan may not provide coverage. Some plans refer transplant patients to "Centers of Excellence" where they have negotiated a price for transplant services. Some plans reduce their coverage when you do not use one of their "Centers of Excellence," wherever it is located. Transportation is usually provided to your assigned "Center of Excellence" when an organ becomes available. Usually you are permitted to take one person from your family with you. If your plan does not provide coverage for your organ transplant see Government Programs and the Financial Assistance sections.
Health Maintenance Organizations
If you are covered by a HMO, you will have to contact your administrator to determine if you are covered for a transplant and where the transplant is to be performed. Some of these plans contract with a center located in another area of the country and will transport you to that center when the organ becomes available. Usually you are permitted to take one person from your family with you. . If your plan does not provide coverage for your organ transplant see Government Programs and the Financial Assistance sections.
No Insurance Coverage
If you are not covered by an indemnity insurance plan or a health maintenance organization see discussion under Financial Assistance and Governmental Programs.
